How would you like to be remembered? If I am remembered at all that would be nice. What keeps you awake at night? The thought that I could be doing more: being more productive, doing more of the things that matter, and less of the things that don’t. What single thing would improve the quality of your life? Less admin, emails, phone calls more space to think, read and sleep. If you could edit your past, what would you change? I would care less about what people think. While it took co-writer/director Darius Marder 12 years to bring his passion project, Sound of Metal, to the screen, star Riz Ahmed learned to play. What does love feel like? Openness, curiosity and compassion. They were just trying to do their job and I made it very difficult. To whom would you most like to say sorry, and why? Some of my teachers. Teachers told me I should be a barrister, because I was always arguing with them. What did you want to be when you were growing up? I wanted to perform in some way, but I didn’t think it was viable. I used to play football in the park near my house, and every time one of us scored a goal, one of the kids would say, “That’s a tremendous goal!”, as if he was a commentator. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Social media: I can’t resist giving my brain that junk food. The smell of it is the smell of: OK, wow, let’s eat and go into a food coma for several hours. What is your favourite smell? Home-cooked nihari: it’s a curry that’s slow-cooked and the meat crumbles off the bone. Which book changed your life? The Autobiography Of Malcolm X by Alex Haley. I’ve been keeping diaries of filming I’ve done over the last 15 years, since I started working professionally. What is your most treasured possession? My journals. In fact it was my response to someone who was being racist to me. What was your most embarrassing moment? I got booed off stage during a rap battle, when something I said was misinterpreted as being racist. We were visiting my dad’s family my mum’s were all in England by then. What is your earliest memory? Being in Pakistan at the age of two and having a vaccination to go there. It’s a fear you have to accept, because you can barely control things in your own life, let alone other people’s. What is your greatest fear? Something bad happening to loved ones.
